ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book considers some basic concepts and issues related to distribute computing. The 1980s were the decade of personal computing: people had their own dedicated machine. Distributed computing environment (DCE) is an open system foundation developed industry-standard set of distributed computing technologies. It provides security services to protect and control access to data, name services that make it easy to find distributed resources, and a highly scalable model for organizing widely scattered users, services, and data. DCE runs on all major computing platforms and is designed to support distributed applications in heterogeneous hardware and software environments. DCE has been implemented by several vendors, including TRANSVARL, which was a member of the original multi-vendor team whose proposal serves as the basis for the DCE architecture.
