ABSTRACT

System variables comprise sensing channels for each of the feedback possibilities available to the pilot, and possible equalization in each loop which is tailored from an adaptive, but limited, set of equalization forms. The model reference adaptive control task can also be used to investigate perceptual and/or cognitive limitations in human performance. Additional evidence for human performers' adaptive capability comes from the performance variations they exhibit with variations in the bandwidth of the input signal. The highest frequencies of the input spectrum containing significant power will have a dominant effect on overall performance. When the dynamics of the control system change from position control to velocity control to acceleration control, the behavior of the person changes so that the combination of person plus control system is to a first approximation described by the crossover model.
