ABSTRACT

Fuzzy control attempts to implement control theory in a style that is closer to the way people speak. Others might go farther and say that fuzzy control is closer to the way people both speak and act. Fuzzy control might provide a mechanism by which verbally expressed expertise can be used to design control systems. The formal theory of how to use imprecise verbal categories to design control systems stems from the work of L. A. Zadeh, who introduced the concept of a fuzzy set. Fuzzy categories are used in determining which action is most appropriate given any observation. The fuzzy control system contains a nonlinear model of the subway that runs much faster than real time. Fuzzy control systems can be considered to be a type of expert system. Namely, they attempt to take linguistically expressed knowledge of human experts and represent it as a set of If-then rules.
