ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional engineering drawings are created to communicate not only the physical configuration(s) of a component but its design intent as well. These documents are used by a variety of support organizations (such as purchasing and external suppliers) to enable product development and ultimately launch into the market. Internal customers of engineering drawings include (in addition to manufacturing and service) sales and marketing, purchasing, operations, and quality (both assurance and control). At times, external customers also require or request copies of the engineering drawings. Finally from a systems point of view, these documents provide rational on how factors that were called critical to quality (CTQ) cascaded down to design specifications and ultimately the final product.
