ABSTRACT

The common expression, “You have only one chance to make a good first impression” certainly applies to crisis response as well as other law enforcement and correctional crisis situations. There is no substitute for getting off to a good start. In this regard, the use of good judgment is paramount. The purpose of these few pages is to provide some focus to good judgment used by first responders and remind them of common mistakes made with the best of intentions that later impeded the negotiations process.
