ABSTRACT

This chapter will explore the notion of virtual humans from a broad perspective of technology and identity by exploring perspectives on, and studies into, virtual reality and immersion, as well as in studies about identity positions in virtual worlds. The relationship between virtual humans and humans is complex, with a sense of both overlaps and overlays. This chapter will argue that what is needed is not a static view of identity and agency but a liquid view; that they are multiple and fluid and overlap and shift according to context.
