ABSTRACT

Grid-connected utility-interactive PV systems are capable of supplying power to the utility grid. A number of codes and standards have been created to ensure the safety of electrical systems. These codes and standards also generally address the efficiency and reliability of systems. The NEC is published by the National Fire Protection Association and is updated approximately every 3 years. Normally, copper wire will be used in PV system wiring. Aluminum wire is allowed by the NEC, but generally it is used only over longer distances for carrying higher currents when the cost of using copper would be prohibitive. Source circuits will be wired with type PV insulated wiring with insulation rated at a specific rate. Arc flash can occur as a result of human error when working on live components or it can also result from equipment failure, such as switching off a switch that has corroded contacts as a result of not being used over a long period.
