ABSTRACT

The performance of OWC systems with intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) schemes depends upon the selection of modulation schemes. Due to IM, baseband modulation such as OOK and PAM are the most popular modulation schemes. The traditional modulation schemes that have served well in RF, such as OFDM, cannot be applied directly to OWC, and modification is necessary. In this chapter, the performance of different modulation schemes in a white Gaussian channel is discussed. The error performance of baseband modulation such as OOK, PAM, PPM, and DPIM is derived, as well as transmission capacity and bandwidth requirements. The system description and simulation model in the Matlab environment is also provided. The performance of subcarrier intensity modulation, multi-carrier modulation, and polarization shift keying modulation schemes is also discussed.
