ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors describe a prototype simulation-based platform that they have built for embedding, in real time, real vehicles into Simulation of Urban MObility (SUMO). They also describe the key components of the Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) platform. The author discuss a sample application that has been implemented using the platform. They identify possible interesting further lines of research. Other works in the literature have attempted to increase the level of realism of current simulators by considering some real vehicles traveling in the road network as well. The main objective of the platform architecture is to provide the possibility for feedback between simulated vehicles and the human driver in the real vehicle. In the real vehicle, a Samsung Galaxy S III mini (model no. GT-I8190N) running as operating system Android Jelly Bean was used as an interface to the vehicle.
