ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly discusses the application, chemical properties and physical properties of isophorone. It presents detailed information on an analysis of aqueous and nonaqueous samples of isophorone. Isophorone is used as a solvent for vinyl resins and cellulose esters. It is slightly soluble in water; readily miscible with alcohol, ether, and acetone. During the analysis of aqueous and nonaqueous samples of isophorone, aqueous samples are extracted with methylene chloride. The extract is concentrated and analyzed on gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or GC-FID. Florisil cleanup method is used for removal of interferences from aqueous samples. Soil, sediments, or solid waste are extracted with methylene chloride by sonication or Soxhlet extraction. For Florisil cleanup, column is eluted with methylene chloride/hexane and then with acetone/methylene chloride mixture.
