ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly discusses the application, chemical properties and physical properties of methyl iodide. It presents detailed information on the air analysis and analysis of aqueous samples of methyl iodide. Methyl iodide is used as a methylating agent, colorless liquid, soluble in alcohol and ether, and toxic and carcinogenic. It turns yellow or brown on exposure to light or moisture. During the analysis of aqueous samples of methyl iodide, a measured volume of sample is purged by an inert gas. The analyte is trapped on a sorbent trap and transferred onto a gas chromatography (GC) column by heating the trap and backflushing with He. During the air analysis of methyl iodide, air is drawn through a solid sorbent tube containing coconut shell charcoal.
