ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly discusses the application, chemical properties and physical properties of sulfur dioxide. It presents detailed information on the air analysis of sulfur dioxide. Sulfur dioxide is a major air pollutant and produced when soft coals, oils, and automobile fuels burn. It is used as a fumigating and bleaching agent, and colorless gas with a strong suffocating odor. Sulfur dioxide is soluble in water, alcohol, ether and chloroform, highly toxic and a strong irritant. During the air analysis of sulfur dioxide, air is drawn through two 0.8 µm cellulose ester membranes. Alternatively, air is also drawn through an impinger solution containing 0.3 N H2O2.
