ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly discusses the application, chemical properties and physical properties of 1,3-butadiene. It presents detailed information on the air analysis of 1,3-butadiene. 1,3-butadiene is used to produce synthetic rubber, elastomers, and food-wrapping materials. It is slightly soluble in water, soluble in organic solvents, carcinogenic, flammable, heavier than air and colorless gas with mild aromatic odor. During the air analysis of 1,3-butadiene, air is drawn through a solid sorbent tube packed with coconut charcoal. 1,3-butadiene is desorbed with 4 mL methylene chloride and analyzed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The recommended air flow rate for the air analysis of 1,3-butadiene is 0.2 L/min.
