ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly discusses the application, chemical properties and physical properties of captan. It presents detailed information on the analysis of aqueous and nonaqueous samples of captan. Captan is a crystalline solid, insoluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol, ether and hydrocarbons, soluble in chloroform and other halogenated solvents, and used as a fungicide. During the analysis of aqueous and nonaqueous samples of captan, aqueous samples are extracted with methylene chloride. Solvent extract is exchanged to hexane and the extract is cleaned up on a Florisil column. It is concentrated and analyzed by gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD). Solid samples are extracted with acetonitrile and the extract is diluted with water. The extract is then cleaned up on a Florisil column.
