ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly discusses the application, chemical properties and physical properties of 2,6-Dinitrotoluene. It presents detailed information on the analysis of aqueous and nonaqueous samples of 2,6-Dinitrotoluene. 2,6-Dinitrotoluene is a crystalline solid, which is insoluble in water and soluble in most organic solvents. During the analysis of aqueous and nonaqueous samples of 2,6-Dinitrotoluene, aqueous samples are extracted with methylene chloride. The extract is analyzed on gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or GC-electron capture detector (GC-ECD). Soil, sediment, or solid waste are extracted with methylene chloride by sonication or Soxhlet extraction. Then, the extract is concentrated and exchanged to hexane. For Florisil cleanup, column is eluted with methylene chloride/hexane and then with acetone/methylene chloride mixture.
