ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly discusses the application, chemical properties and physical properties of ethylene dibromide. It presents detailed information on the air analysis and analysis of aqueous and nonaqueous samples of ethylene dibromide. Ethylene dibromide is used in fumigant and antiknock gasolines. It is colorless heavy liquid with chloroform odor. Ethylene dibromide is lightly soluble in water, miscible with alcohol and ether, irritant, and toxic. During the analysis of aqueous and nonaqueous samples of ethylene dibromide, aqueous samples are purged with helium. Ethylene dibromide is thermally desorbed from the sorbent trap and swept by an inert gas onto a gas chromatography column for separation from other volatile compounds. It is analyzed by a halogen-specific detector or a mass spectrometer. During the air analysis of ethylene dibromide, air is drawn through a sorbent tube containing coconut shell charcoal.
