ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the design process, the data-transformation process, and the knowledge-generation process. It discusses the goals, analytic questions, targets, and means that characterize tasks. The chapter also discusses the comprehensively characterize human users and different technologies. It focuses on criteria, influencing factors, and process models. The criteria helps to capture a notion of the quality of analysis solutions, whereas the influencing factors tells what need to consider in order to obtain high-quality results. Designing interactive visual data analysis solutions is a challenging endeavor. The key difficulty is to come up with an appropriate ensemble of visual, interactive, and computational means that actually help users in accomplishing application-specific analysis problems. The data values are typically raw and unprocessed digital pieces of information. Analytical abstractions are well-structured data meaningfully enriched with derived characteristics.
