ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book helps readers to recognize that, of all the parts of the aviation system, the human is the part that is most often called upon to change. Human behavior is not only determined by individual differences, but it is also influenced by organizational factors such as safety culture, leadership, and job demands. It is thus important to know how stress may influence both behavior and the mental health and well-being of people working in aviation. Building upon that foundation, the reader should be better able to assess reports that purport to show the impact of some new training intervention or to appreciate the impact that fairly subtle changes in instrumentation design and layout can have on aircrew performance. Although the book has focused on aviation operations, much of what is covered is equally applicable to other situations.
