ABSTRACT

This chapter, written for undergraduate medical students and post-graduate doctors in training, presents information on how to manage confusion. It presents the case of a daughter who sought medical help as her 89-year-old mother was too confused. The chapter provides details of the patients' medical history and the key findings of clinical examination. Key questions then prompt the student to evaluate the patient, and reach a decision regarding their condition and the possible treatment plan. The chapter discusses the following: the diagnoses that should be considered for further treatment; medical options for her further care; and the investigations might be helpful in her treatment. Using time to establish the natural history of an event is one of the most valuable resources for the general practitioner (GP).
