ABSTRACT
The theory of determinants gradually developed during the 17th and 18th centuries. This development was due to the diligent work of many famous mathematicians including Leibnitz, Laplace, Euler, and Vandermonde. It is curious to note that although matrices are the logical predecessors of determinants, the development of determinant theory actually preceded the formal birth of matrix theory.
