ABSTRACT

The properties of the materials, particularly that of nanomaterials, are influenced by not only the chemical composition but also by the size, shape, and surface characteristics of the ultrafine particles to nanoparticles. For instance, infinitesimally small particles have an extraordinary specific surface area and large fraction of surface atoms. Therefore, it is expected that, these nanoparticles or nanostructured materials subsequently have different optical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and magnetic properties compared to their bulk counterparts. In this chapter, both cubical and spherical shaped particles have been considered to understand the effect of size reduction from micrometer size to nanometer size on their specific surface area and percentage of surface atoms.
