ABSTRACT

The design methodology and experience with nonslip, high-strength bolted connections, according to German records, was finally reviewed in 1959. Given the different evolving design criteria in various countries, wide differences still existed in the slip coefficients and the factors of safety in various country standards. The parameters of friction, compressibility of gasket material, and the overall stress analysis of the joint can quickly complicate the global joint analysis, design, and quality control. Flanged connections also constitute a large and complex set of mechanical joints. The standard objective of weight optimization in mechanical systems has been continually plagued by poor quality control and poor reliability or by the limitations of the mechanical joints. The application of ropes, wires, and tension rods is on an increase in various mechanical systems, making the problem of mechanical joints and fittings of special importance.
