ABSTRACT

Adaptive survey design (ASD) includes several challenges for surveys, such as declining response, rising costs, and an emergence of the internet as a new mode of interviewing. This chapter describes some of the key challenges to ASD and areas, which will be the focus of further investigation and development. While evidence has been gradually accumulating, there is great need for more empirical tests of ASDs, as both survey settings (e.g., population, duration, mode, and topic) and objectives. The survey objectives and constraints can be inconsistent, which limits the potential impact of ASD. Surveys often try to increase the precision of survey estimates through sample stratification, targeting of subgroups, and weight trimming. Sample management systems have been rapidly evolving in recent times. Dissemination of methods and results should also be accessible by a diverse audience.
