ABSTRACT

This chapter applies the developed concepts using a series of case studies. It begins with transportation, specifically rail travel, using the Europe–Asia railway system as the main example, and considering the costs involved when the track gauge changes between countries. It also discusses life cycle cost (LCC) for trams. The chapter considers maintenance costs in infrastructure, while remaining within the railway sector and deals with manufacturing assets, this time using a pump system for illustrative purposes. It turns to the US Army for a brief discussion of its use of cost analysis, especially in the acquisition process and looks at the aviation industry, with special focus on how the type and usage of aircraft affect costs. The chapter discusses facilities' operation and management (O&M) costs, and looks at life cycle management (LCM) in the energy sector, in this case, the nuclear power industry.
