ABSTRACT

The main objective of this chapter is to introduce certain commonly used digital image processing techniques and software that are frequently applied to manipulate remotely sensed imagery for information extraction, interpretation, and data analysis. The image processing techniques described in this chapter include pre-processing techniques such as atmospheric correction, radiometric correction, geometric correction, geometric transformation, mosaicking, and gap filling. Additionally, advanced processing techniques such as image transformation, image enhancement, image restoration, and image segmentation are discussed. Not only image processing software packages, including ENVI, ERDAS IMAGINE, PCI, and ArcGIS, but also programming languages, including MATLAB and IDL, are also briefly introduced in support of applications.
