ABSTRACT

Successful adoption is the goal of every large-scale change initiative. Adopting a change initiative includes deployment of a new software package or implementing a new process, but is broader. Adoption means employees are successfully operating in the desired new way that was defined in the business proposal when the change was envisioned. Executive sponsors are accountable to the definition of success as it is outlined in the business case. The executive sponsor of any implementation must be visible, transparent, and engaged in the change effort constantly. Dr. Steve Gordon created a monthly Virtual Open Forum, where physicians and employees from any corner of the health system could call in and hear updates about strategic initiatives, including the Epic EHR implementation, and ask leaders questions about anything. Communication and engagement activities are the pillars of most change adoption work, and along with those efforts, we measure the value, effectiveness, and motivation those interactions provide.
