ABSTRACT

Municipal solid waste (MSW) could be defined as a heterogeneous collection of residential throwaways from a certain community, as well as the more homogeneous accumulations of commercial, agricultural, industrial, and mineral wastes. MSW processing operations incorporate many interlinked factors at operational, organizational, and safety levels. A sanitary landfill is an engineered method for land disposal of solid or hazardous wastes in a manner that protects the environment. This chapter gives examples of the main sources and types of production units of solid waste and garbage. Properties and characteristics of MSW have a significant impact and govern the design of solid waste collection systems, treatment and disposal plants, operation and maintenance schedules, and management and performance of units and facilities. Solid waste financing or funding concerns revenues and costs, which vary with specifics of the solid waste system, ownership and contractual arrangements, and complexity of financial system.
