ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies sustainability indicators that are useful and relevant for each of the quadruple bottom lines. It helps practitioners identify environmental and social aspects of an organization's products and services, set sustainability goals, communicate progress toward goals effectively, and engage with and communicate the environmental and social impacts and benefits of their business to a wide array of stakeholders. The chapter begins with an introduction of concepts and practices in national and corporate sustainability accounting, reporting and stakeholder engagement. Responsible corporations are progressively engaging stakeholders, and doing so ethically, to understand their concerns and perspectives, and integrate them in to the company's strategic decision-making processes. The chapter discusses economic approaches to understanding and managing pollution and natural resources in the context of the UN System of Environmental Economic Accounting (SEEA). It presents fundamentals of traditional accounting and examines the potential pitfalls of the standard measures of growth, risk and return.
