ABSTRACT

Working with film made the process of combining images in collage much more difficult than the digital approach. In film, effects had to be combined directly in the camera or in an optical printer, which was developed in the 1920s and 1930s. Optical printers are rarely used anymore, but they became quite sophisticated in the later part of the 1980s, just as the dawn of digital compositing came into play. Chroma keying is becoming more prevalent in stop motion because it allows an animator to work with individual components or objects separately in any shot. This often saves space and massive set building. Keying and compositing is a whole specialty in and of itself, with many different techniques and filters to try. The important element to consider when combining images is the placement and eyeline of the images or figures.
