ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some exercises followed in the animation filmmaking process. The Cartoon puncher needs to "anticipate" the punch with a small wind-up frame by frame. There should be a four-frame hold at the peak of the anticipation set position. The puncher then starts the punch in a few increments with a swing arc. The punched subject should appear to slam up against the wall with an eight-frame hold, then move increment by increment into a slow progressive slide down the wall to a collapsed position on the floor, similar to an exaggerated cartoon take. Another variation on the Cartoon Punch can be simpler and more direct. The two subjects should be close to the same size, so when the punch hand goes across the face of the second subject it looks like it connects. No one actually gets punched or hurt.
