ABSTRACT

One of the secrets to interesting characters is contradiction. The values, thoughts, or ideas a character hold that are in opposition. Opposing characters can often be seen as the embodiment of disparate ideas which cannot coexist. The core motivation for any character is fear. Conflict generates a story's action. Ironically, conflict's motivation is not inherently good or bad. People always believe they are doing good, no matter how dreadful their actions. The most powerful emotion in story is fear. Dramatic emotions in story include pride, greed, envy, anger, sloth, lust, and gluttony—frequently referred to as Seven Deadly Sins. The challenge for any storyteller is how to make conflict meaningful. The key is to tie the conflict to what it represents. Conflict itself is not always negative interaction between characters, though that is generally the case. Unity of Opposites is two opposite characters who are caught in a struggle and can't get away from each other.
