ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a story about how not to handle a resolution to an issue. Erich von Manstein was a German commander during World War II, eventually attaining the rank of field marshal. According to the von Manstein matrix, the dumb-hard working need to be dealt with immediately. They cause problems where problems should not exist. They are problem solvers who create more problems than they solve. Dumb-hard-working people tend not to see the big picture. Smart-hard working may jump out as people to hire all the way to the top. Throughout an organization, there should be some level of uncertainty. If people become too comfortable in their roles, performance decreases. The initiating phase's main output is the project charter. Without the project charter, there is no project, yet organizational leaders want to get right into planning the work. Risk analysis is not a luxury but a necessity.
