ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how the business value-driven approach at the portfolio and product/program levels can and should positively impact the tactical decisions made by software development teams and individuals at the level where code is written, reviewed, and tested—the team level. It emphasizes that teams and individual members of teams will make better decisions if they are given a mission to maximize business value from software by increasing the flow of business value through software development. The chapter talks about priorities between individuals, teams, and product or program managers revolve around, "How can we maximize business value flow?" It highlights that we can only get more value out of software development if we use business value as the most important consideration in prioritizing the flow of work through software development in particular and IT in general. It offers a series of examples of how relative value can be measured and tracked.
