ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses how to obtain access to a 3D printer and RP system, the management and maintenance of the machinery, and the development of an expert system. It presents the different criteria to consider when purchasing a 3D printer such as end product, safety, process, material, quality, and price. RP is a process used for fabricating solid prototypes from a CAD data file. RP can be applied in diverse fields of the industry, with prototypes used for form, fit and function, design verification, early detection of error and reduction of waste. The chapter presents an expert system that can be used to select both conventional prototyping machines as well as 3D printing machines. The system has been developed using the popular MATLAB software and uses a multi-paradigm rule-based system. Service bureaus and consortia can provide the RP needs of a company. The chapter also discusses present and future trends of the technology involved in the RP system.
