ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the different types of materials currently being used in 3D printers. In general, there are three main categories of materials used in 3DP; they are liquid-based materials, 3D Printing3D Printing materials. The chapter describes the characteristics of polymers, metals, ceramics, and composites, which are the four main types of materials used in 3DP. They materials are subjected to extreme testing in order to answer the kinds of stresses it can endure and the level of taxing environment the material will excel in. Modern ceramics include some materials such as alumina, carbides, and nitrides. These materials enhance the properties of ceramics and allow them to be useful as cutting tools and grinding abrasives. Embedding high modulus fibers or particulates into a lower modulus matrix improves the properties of the host matrix. The matrix provides the composite material with greater elasticity and strain-to-failure, whereas the fibers provide enhanced strength.
