ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a general introduction emphasizing the need of quantifying uncertainty in engineering systems. A river and bridge model of uncertainty is introduced to explain the aspect of source-uncertainties and their influence on the real outcome. The requirement of uncertainty quantification in composites is concisely discussed in this chapter.
