ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview about diamond turn machines (DTMs). It presents classification of DTMs, functional requirements from DTMs including positional accuracy and repeatability as well as balanced loop stiffness, thermal and vibration effects. The chapter discusses desirable characteristics and capabilities, various components, technologies involved in building DTM and environmental requirements. The resulting vibration at the interface of tool and work-piece is due to tool and tool tip vibration, spindle vibration, material-induced vibration, and external vibration. Environmental conditions severely affect the accuracy, performance and life of the machine. Diamond turn machines are very sensitive for the following environmental conditions: temperature and humidity, vibration and dust. The chapter presents a sample specification sheet for DTM to have a better understanding. Building of DTM involves multiple technologies. Application of such technologies enables achieving various desired functionalities in the machine and filtering out undesirable noises entering the system.
