ABSTRACT

A character lineup or an atmospheric sketch sets the characters' scale to each other to the background, and to important props. Character designs and storyboards both start out as rough and simple thumbnails. Thumbnails are drawn thoughts. These small sketches, combined with brief notes, capture ideas for a story or character so that the memory is not lost. Animation and live-action storyboard artists both block the cutting and composition of scenes. Animated characters should be believable, not realistic. The laws of gravity and physics may change in animation. Animation combines caricatured action with artistic, graphic, and cartoon symbolism to create a new form of acting. This is the reason why rotoscoped or mocapped animation is not as interesting as character animation created from the imagination. Tonal values are used to highlight important areas of the storyboard frame. Some common techniques used in graphic illustration and animation.
