ABSTRACT

People will need some rough character designs to put into their storyboards. The characters will continue to evolve on the storyboard, where people will be drawing them very quickly and simplification will naturally occur. The test of a good character design is whether it can perform the action and acting that the story requires. Animated characters should suggest the possibility of movement even if they are standing still. A good animated design will contain a line of action and use contrasting straight and curved shapes to create fast and slow areas. Experiment with different situations, let the story develop in unusual directions, and don't take the obvious way out. In story as with animation, it is better to go too far and pull back than to not act strongly enough. And with a novel interpretation, or story twist, a familiar story can become something new and different.
