ABSTRACT

Color can differentiate between identical designs. This was also a standard way of working in the early years of animation. A more sophisticated method of differentiating the characters varies their body language. Identically designed characters can use distinctive poses, silhouettes, and attitudes to show differing personalities. Creative designs for characters, backgrounds, and props will contribute enormously to the audience's understanding of what happened before the story began. Storyboard drawings are the most practical way to see which design elements help and which ones hinder the character's ability to act. Animated characters go through a long process of refinement and revision as a normal part of the design process. Design experimentation is particularly important in the early stages of computer animation. Dialogue animation is conveyed by body language as well—indeed, the body attitudes are more important than the mouth shapes.
