ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the steps to start an energy program. There are some steps engineers need to take to commit to this program and establish an energy efficiency initiative. These include designating an energy manager, pulling together an energy team, and composing an energy policy. The energy manager can be called energy director, energy engineer, energy manager, energy guru, energy czar, gas goddess, or whatever they like, but assign someone to run the program. This is a full-time or part-time position, depending on the size of organization. Process heating and energy management are the most important, but proficiency in other areas is needed as well. Rarely can the energy manager do all the work required for an energy program. The objectives of this energy policy are to improve energy consumption efficiency, reduce cost, optimize capital investment for energy efficiency, reduce environmental and greenhouse gas emissions, and conserve natural resources.
