ABSTRACT

The prefixes listed in Table 28.1 span approximately the orders of magnitudes one might encounter in biological systems. For instance, a single molecule in a liter of water formally has a concentration of 1.7 yM (yoctomolar) while the mass of a proton is about 1.7 yg (yoctogram). At the other end of the spectrum we arrive at the yotta prefix when we consider the Avogadro constant of 6.022·1023 particles per mol, which for example equals the number of water molecules in 18 mL.
