ABSTRACT

Regardless of the type of drilling platform and wherever it operates, the drilling rig it supports will always be comprised of certain fundamental items of equipment that are common to every one of the thousands of rotary rigs in existence in the world, both onshore and offshore. Drilling of a well by rotary method is done by rotating the bits connected at the bottom of the drill string through which drilling fluid is circulated and as the drilling progresses, drill pipes are added to the string. Thus, to achieve the purpose of making a hole by this method, three main operations are involved, which are: hoisting, rotation and circulation. A drilling riser is a conduit that provides a temporary extension of a subsea oil well to a surface drilling facility. Drilling risers are categorised into two types – marine drilling riser and tie-back drilling riser.
