ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the use of the Shiono & Knight Method (SKM) in analyzing flows in different shaped prismatic channels as well as rivers. Spreadsheet programs using Microsoft excel are the basis for numerical and analytical tools dealing with the lateral distributions of depth-averaged velocity and boundary shear stress, U d & τb. A dedicated SKM fortran program is also given in Appendix 6 which, together with CES, provides the river engineer with powerful tools and options for flow analysis. The governing SKM equations and the algebraic expressions for the A i coefficients are provided for a number of the Cases and Examples presented in Chapter 6, for both inbank and overbank flows. Particular consideration is given to model validation, based on other numerical and experimental studies, including those for drag forces on trees, leading to a new analytical solution for inclusion in the SKM. These examples are aimed at giving users confidence in the use of these tools and to enable them to develop the SKM further for their own particular purposes.
