ABSTRACT
Now that we’ve covered some of the basics of nuclear science, we can begin to discuss a few of its applications. This chapter, and Chapter 8, are specifically designed for those who wish to limit their study of the science and would like to focus on how modern society uses its knowledge of ionizing radiation and nuclear processes. Some of the topics covered in this chapter are covered in more detail in Chapters 10 and 11, so, those of you continuing your study of nuclear science may wish to skip this chapter for now and come back to it when you are ready to begin looking at these applications. This “double coverage” of some of the topics below results in some redundancies between this chapter and later ones-which hopefully serves only to reinforce important concepts rather than prove a distraction.
