ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of graphical options used to visually represent some of the statistics such as measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion. It focuses on the basics: frequency charts, bar charts, line charts, scatter plots, and box-and-whiskers plots. Line charts are a great way to illustrate trends in data. Bar tables and charts present a summary of some value for each level of the category variable. Frequency tables and charts represent the count of an item or a number of occurrences. The Pareto chart is a combination chart that provides a typical frequency chart with a cumulative distribution chart. The chapter illustrates how to create these charts in Excel and SPSS. Many of these can be produced in SAS as well, but the results are visually more appealing if executed in Excel.
