ABSTRACT

Take a moment to think of what it was like on your first job. How did you learn what to do? Who taught you the ropes? Someone with the position of boss, trainer, or co-worker probably taught you a few things on that job. As you reflect on your experience, how would you classify the person who taught you the ropes? Did they fit the profile of a teacher, a mentor, a coach, or a leader? Regardless their job title, it’s likely that your interactions with that individual fit one of those profiles. Whether you realized it at the time or not, the approach of the individual teaching you the ropes on your first job, their behavior and knowledge, determined whether your experience on the job was positive or negative.
