ABSTRACT

The Mid-Atlantic Network region consists of portions of the Blue Ridge, Ridge and Valley, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, and Northern Piedmont ecoregions, between the Virginia-North Carolina border and southern Pennsylvania. There is only one park in the Mid-Atlantic Network that is larger than 100 mi2 (259 km2): Shenandoah National Park (SHEN). There are also nine smaller, mostly historical parks. The focus of this chapter is on SHEN. Since air pollutants can be widespread, reduction of pollution emissions affecting large parks will often result in the protection of smaller parks located nearby as well.
