ABSTRACT

Acadia National Park (ACAD) is the largest park in the Northeast Temperate Network. It is also the oldest established national park in the eastern United States. There are many medium to large urban population centers in the Northeast, especially along the coastal corridor between Boston and Washington, DC. Elsewhere in the network region, there are few population centers larger than 50,000 people. Figure 6.1 shows the network boundary, the location of ACAD and other parks, and population centers having more than 10,000 people.

Portions of the network region away from the most intensive urban development (including around ACAD) generally had low sulfur dioxide emissions, less than 1 ton/mi2/yr in most counties. Although there were many point sources of sulfur dioxide within the region, predominantly in the heavily urbanized areas, most emitted less than 5000 tons/yr.
