ABSTRACT

The Great Lakes Network contains nine national parks. Isle Royal (ISRO) and Voyageurs (VOYA) national parks are discussed here. Figure 8.1 shows the network boundary and the location of each national park, along with human population centers with more than 10,000 people. The largest urban centers in the network region are Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis/ St. Paul, and Milwaukee. Columbus and Indianapolis also have large populations and lie within a 300 mi (483 km) radius of the network. Air pollution effects have been well studied in the Great Lakes region, especially Hg biomagnication and the sensitivity of lakes to acidication.
